Content: This course is designed for learners at upper-intermediate level who wish to refresh their general language skills. Modern teaching methods encourage active participation. ILIAS is frequently used for interactive activities such as forums or surveys. Since the main focus in class is speaking, more individual practice in grammar, vocabulary, and writing takes place outside of class.

Regular feedback helps students assess their strengths and areas for improvement.

In small groups, participants compare theoretical guidelines with practice in their respective fields and share their findings in an online forum.

Type of assessment: The course grade is based on completing a range of tasks, including summarizing and evaluating literature, writing a methods section, writing an abstract, and text analyses. Content: This course aims to strengthen the oral English skills of the participants, with a strong emphasis on speaking in every lesson. It covers a range of topics and provides a supportive environment to overcome language barriers and engage in discussions. Additionally, students are introduced to debating and take part in a group debate on a topic chosen by the class. Online resources such as discussion forums will be used to encourage written debate outside of class, so a willingness to use ILIAS and contribute is required.

Content: This advanced C2 General English course offers a dynamic approach for students seeking to refine their language skills. Through interactive discussions, cooperative tasks, and communicative learning methods, participants enhance both spoken and written fluency. Special attention is given to vocabulary enrichment and identifying typical “German” mistakes. The curriculum employs a flipped classroom model, integrating online tasks outside class with in-class language feedback. Expect an immersive, participatory experience where writing tasks complement collaborative spoken activities.

Assessment: No final exam – the course is passed by completing a range of tasks such as forum postings, two proficiency language tests on ILIAS, a group writing task, and a Pecha Kucha/Speed Geeking presentation.

Content: This General English course offers a dynamic approach for students aiming to refine their language proficiency to an expert level. Through engaging discussions, cooperative tasks, and interactive learning techniques, participants improve their skills in both spoken and written English. With a focus on expanding vocabulary and addressing common language pitfalls, the curriculum adopts a communicative approach, incorporating online tasks outside class and personalized language feedback. Anticipate an immersive, collaborative learning environment with an emphasis on spoken communication in class.

Assessment: No final exam – the course is passed by completing a range of tasks such as forum postings, CPE tests (on ILIAS), participation in a debate, and a presentation.

 

Discussion and Debate

ECTS credits: 2–3 ECTS

Prerequisites: 80% or higher in the placement test, or successful completion of another C1 or C2 course at the Language Center, or a UNIcert® II or III certificate.

Course materials: ILIAS is used.

Content: This course aims to boost participants' spoken English skills, with a strong focus on speaking during each class. Covering diverse topics, it fosters a supportive environment for overcoming language barriers and engaging in discussions. Additionally, students will be introduced to debating and will take part in a group debate on a topic chosen by the class. Online materials such as discussion forums will be used to encourage written debate outside class, so a willingness to use ILIAS and contribute is necessary.

Assessment: ECTS points are gained through regular, active participation and completing tasks such as debating, forum contributions, and self-assessments.

 

English for Innovative Engineering C2

ECTS credits: 2 ECTS

Prerequisites: 90% or higher in the placement test, or successful completion of another C2 course at the Language Center, or a UNIcert® III certificate.

Course materials: ILIAS is used.

Content: Thisl course immerses advanced engineering and tech students in high-impact English for innovation, combining creative problem-solving, technical reporting, and dynamic verbal interaction. Through Euro News-style briefings, structured debates, and project meetings, students discuss and defend design ideas while working with AI tools, mind maps, and project platforms to plan, document, and present a Life-Hack or Tiger Team styled innovation challenge suitable for international academic and industry contexts.

Assessment: No final exam – the course grade is based on completing a range of tasks such as prepared briefings, presentations and in-class discussions, written documentation on individually selected projects, and a final presentation.

 

Scientific Writing C2

ECTS credits: 2–3 ECTS

Prerequisites: 90% or higher in the placement test, or successful completion of another C2 course at the Language Center, or a UNIcert® III certificate.

Course materials: Materials will be distributed in class. ILIAS will be used.

Content: Participants discuss the components of an empirical research report (scientific paper): abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. At each stage, participants practise talking about subject-specific content, such as results and methods. Both in and outside class, they complete writing tasks to practise appropriate wording and academic style. Participants collaborate in peer-editing sessions to improve their texts and explore different approaches to writing tasks. In small groups, students also compare theoretical guidelines with practices in their respective fields and share their findings in an online forum.

Assessment: No final exam – the course grade is based on completing tasks such as summarising and evaluating literature, writing a methods section, writing results and discussion sections, and producing an abstract.

 

English with TED Talks

ECTS credits: 2 ECTS

For organisational reasons, participants at C1 and C2 level are combined in one course.

Content: English with TED Talks is an advanced-level course designed to enhance oral communication skills through the analysis and discussion of TED Talks. Students explore a range of thought-provoking themes, examining both the content and delivery of the talks. The course combines structured discussions with practical exercises, including presentations and some written tasks, to develop critical thinking, articulation, and persuasive communication in academic and professional contexts.

Assessment: ECTS points are gained by completing a range of tasks outlined in class. Individual preparation and regular participation are necessary to get the most out of the course.

 

Business Leadership

ECTS credits: 2–3 ECTS

Content: This dynamic course is suitable for students from any faculty who want to improve their English skills through creative teamwork in a variety of situations. Participants work in groups to represent the management of a fictional company and deal with case studies and realistic business scenarios. Tasks include presenting a business idea, presenting a company and its products at a trade fair, managing a crisis, and handling a press conference. Language feedback is provided for both written and spoken tasks.

Assessment: No final exam – passing involves completing a range of tasks explained in class. Regular participation is important, as the ECTS points are determined by continuous assessment and active involvement.

 

International English Test Preparation (TOEFL, IELTS etc.)

ECTS credits: 2–3 ECTS

Prerequisites: 65% or higher in the placement test, or successful completion of another course at B2 level or above at the Language Center, or a UNIcert® certificate (I–III).
For organisational reasons, participants from B2 level upwards are combined in one course.

Course materials: Materials will be distributed in class and ILIAS will be used.

Content: This course prepares students for a range of English proficiency exams, including TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge exams, and other internationally recognised tests. Through weekly sessions, participants complete practice activities corresponding to the different exam sections: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The course focuses on developing the skills required for each section, with targeted exercises and mock exams simulating real test conditions. Regular feedback helps students assess their strengths and areas for improvement.

Note: This is a preparation course only. If you wish to register for one of the exams, please contact the relevant organisation.

Assessment: Active participation and regular preparation are important to get the most out of the course, as ECTS points are awarded through continuous assessment, e.g. essay writing, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and speaking tasks.

Intensive courses during the semester break


English Intermediate Intensive

Credit points: 2-3 ECTS

Course materials: Course materials will be handed out. ILIAS will be used.

Content: The main aim of the course is to gain confidence in everyday English conversation and written communication. Your vocabulary will be extended to more specialized topics and more complex grammar topics will be covered. You will acquire the ability to express yourself more specifically in relation to everyday and specialized matters and further consolidate your skills in the foreign language.

  • Conversation on general topics

  • Writing short essays

  • Reading exercises (short stories)

Type of assessment

- Oral expression tasks, e.g. presentations or group discussions lasting 10 minutes

- Listening comprehension tasks lasting 20 minutes.

- Reading comprehension tasks (including tasks related to language form) lasting 35 minutes

- Tasks for free written language production of 35 minutes.

These skills can be combined and tested in meaningful combinations. Further details will be announced at the beginning of the course.

English for Work B2

Content: The aim of this course is to prepare students for working life by developing the skills they are likely to need. Topics include: meetings, presentations, negotiating, small talk, job applications, correspondence and teamwork.

There will be an emphasis on improving spoken English skills during in-class sessions. Students will be expected to use ILIAS to complete tasks outside class.

Type of assessment: No final exam - passing involves completing a range of tasks including short ILIAS tests, written task uploads, a mock job interview and a meeting role-play.


English Boot Camp C1-C2

Credit points: 2-3 ECTS

Course materials: Materials will be distributed in class. ILIAS will be used.

Content: The C1-C2 Boot Camps are currently only offered as an intensive course and is designed to get your spoken English top fit through highly interactive and focused sessions. Each class prioritizes active speaking practice and the course explores a wide range of engaging topics. You will be challenged to advance your language skills by placing you in new and dynamic situations, enhancing your confidence and proficiency in discussions and presentations.

In addition to in-class activities, online materials, including ILIAS forums, are used to support your learning and practice outside of class. Boots are not required!

Autumn Boot Camp will be offered at the end of summer semester (early October) and Spring Boot Camp will be offered at the end of winter semester (early April). The courses have different content and credit points can be gained from both.

Type of assessment: No final exam. Credit points are achieved by regular attendance and completing tasks such as written assignments and forums.

NOTE: This course is one of the courses that counts towards either our UNIcert® III or UNICert® IV program.

    English for Architects

    Content: This course will be of interest to students of architecture who wish to improve their communicative ability in English with a particular emphasis on their subject area. Materials used in the course include current literature, magazines, weblinks and video clips. Themes include the planning process, construction, building materials, project management and design.

    Type of assessment: No final exam - passing involves completing a range of tasks e.g. ILIAS forums, tests, a presentation and a role-play.
