For beginners with little or no prior knowledge

This course introduces the first basic phrases, fundamental grammar, and the vocabulary needed for everyday life. Students are introduced to the Japanese writing system and learn the syllabic script hiragana. The course covers the following topics, among others:

• introducing oneself

• identifying people and things

• Noun phrases

• Verb in the masu form

• Numbers

• Time expressions

• Hiragana syllabary

• Counting unit suffixes

• Time periods

• Syllabic Script: Katakana
