Application procedure

The Language Center uses the SignMeUp portal for course registration. Course places are allocated on a "first-come, first-served" basis (in order of registration receipt).
Since places are permanently allocated directly upon registration, we recommend registering as soon as the registration window opens. This recommendation also applies to students with priority status, as a course place cannot be guaranteed in the event of late registration.

Registration for Language Center courses is done via SignMeUp

Further Information

Information for Students with Priority Status
Students preparing for a stay abroad (Erasmus, overseas, IStO/INTL) or taking the subjects EUKLID, Ethics (Latin only), or Art History (Italian only) can be admitted on a priority basis.

Important: Since the system allocates places in real-time on a "first-come, first-served" basis, priority applicants must take action before the regular start of registration.
Priority registrations after the end of the priority registration window must register regularly starting April 13, 2026. A course place cannot be guaranteed in the event of late registration.

Who is eligible for priority registration?

  • Stay Abroad: Students with a placement confirmation (via email or a corresponding letter) from the sending institute.
  • IStO and INTL: Students with a confirmation for an Erasmus place or a place in KIT-wide exchange programs will receive an invitation from us via email before the regular registration date so they can register for their desired course on a priority basis. A list from IStO and INTL is already available to us.
  • Subject-Specific Requirement (EUKLID, Ethics/Latin, Art History/Italian, and programs not mentioned above): A document showing that you are enrolled in one of these degree programs (e.g., a detailed certificate specifying the fields of study) must be sent via email to the respective contact person (see below) or uploaded during registration at the latest. This information will be verified by us. Eligible students will receive their course confirmation before the regular registration date.

Fees and Payment

KIT Students: One course per semester is free of charge. Each additional course in the same semester is subject to a fee.

Other Participants: For all other eligible participants (e.g., KIT employees), courses are generally subject to a fee.

Payment: After registering, you will receive an email with information regarding bank transfer. The fee must be paid before the start of the course. Please include all requested information in the payment reference field.

Course Offerings and Placement

Please inform yourself in advance on the respective language pages.

English: Please note the mandatory placement test.

Parallel Courses: Letters after the courses (e.g., Italian 1 b) indicate parallel courses at an identical level. You do not necessarily have to start with course "a".

Course Start and Implementation

Semester courses begin in the second week of lectures (from April 27, 2026).

If you cannot attend the first course session, please be sure to inform us in advance so we can hold your place for you.

Minimum number of participants: Courses may be canceled if enrollment is too low (beginners < 10, advanced < 7). In this case, you will be informed via email.

Deregistration: If you are unable to take a place, please deregister yourself promptly via the portal to free up the slot for others. If you have paid a fee for this course, it will only be refunded if you deregister before the course starts. For details, see the Fee Regulations
