Application procedure
The Language Center uses the SignMeUp portal for course registration. Course places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
As places are allocated directly at the time of registration, we recommend registering as soon as the registration window opens. This recommendation also applies to students with a priority claim, as a course place cannot be guaranteed in the event of late registration.
Registration for courses at the Language Center takes place via
Intensive courses
The courses take place during the semester break. Organizationally, these courses are still assigned to the previous semester.
Start of registration: Intensive English courses: Monday, March 23, 2026 at 09:00 (other courses have already taken place).
Semester courses
The courses take place weekly throughout the semester.
Priority registration: Monday, March 30 (09:00), until Friday, April 10, 2026 (12:00).
Main registration: from Monday, April 13, 2026.
For technical reasons, registration begins at different times:
from 09:00: Spanish
from 10:00 a.m.: English
from 11:00 a.m.: French, Italian, Latin and Portuguese
from 12:00: All other languages
Further information
Information for students with prioritization
Students who are preparing for a stay abroad (Erasmus, overseas, IStO/INTL) or who are studying EUKLID, Ethics (Latin only) or Art History (Italian only) can be given priority.
Important: As the system allocates places in real time on a "first come, first served" basis, priority applicants must take action before the regular start of registration.
Priority registrations after the end of the priority registration window must register regularly from April 13, 2026. A course place cannot be guaranteed for late registrations.
Who is eligible for priority registration?
- Study abroad: Students with a confirmation of placement (by e-mail or corresponding letter) from the sending institute.
- IStO and INTL: Students with a confirmation for an Erasmus place or a place in the KIT-wide exchange programs will receive an invitation by e-mail before the regular registration deadline so that they can register for the desired course as a priority. We already have a list from IstO and INTL.
- Subject commitment (EUKLID, Ethics/Latin, Art History/Italian and previously unnamed programs): A document stating that you are enrolled in one of these programs (e.g. a detailed certificate stating your subjects of study) must be sent by e-mail to the relevant contact person (see below), or uploaded at the latest when you register. This information will be checked by us. Students with the appropriate authorization will receive their course confirmation before the regular registration deadline.
Fees and payment
KIT students: One course per semester is free of charge. Each additional course in the same semester is subject to a fee.
Other participants: For all other eligible people (e.g. KIT employees) the courses are generally subject to a fee.
Payment: After registration you will receive an e-mail with information on how to transfer the fee. The fee must be paid before the course begins. Please include all required information in the purpose of payment.
Course offer and placement
Please inform yourself in advance on the respective language pages.
English: Please note the obligatory placement test.
Parallel courses: Letters after the courses (e.g. Italian 1 b) indicate parallel courses at the same level. You do not necessarily have to start with course "a".
Course start and implementation
The semester courses start in the second week of lectures (from April 27, 2026).
If you are unable to attend the first course date, please inform us in advance so that we can keep your place on the course for you.
Minimum number of participants: Courses may be canceled if there are too few participants (beginners < 10, advanced < 7). In this case you will be informed by e-mail.
Cancellation: If you are unable to attend a course, please cancel independently via the portal to release the place for others.
